The Web Is Becoming Agent-First: What Vercel's Traffic Data Reveals
If your digital strategy is still built around human eyeballs, you may already be optimizing for the wrong audience.
That's not a provocative thought experiment. It's a data-backed reality emerging from one of the world's largest web infrastructure platforms. Guillermo Rauch, CEO of Vercel, recently shared traffic data that should change how founders, marketers, and developers think about the web.
The Numbers That Change Everything
According to Guillermo Rauch, Vercel's network data over the last 30 days shows that 58.18% of all traffic is bot-originated. To put that in context, that figure was 32% in January 2024. The majority of traffic across the Vercel network is now machine-generated.
But it doesn't stop there.
Rauch also shared that over 60% of deployments on Vercel are now agentic, up from approximately 3% in January 2026. That is a near-vertical curve. And on Vercel's own documentation sites, up to 83% of pageviews are now coming from agents. Rauch noted that this percentage reliably increases the more they optimize their content for agents.
His conclusion? Rauch expects that 'direct' human internet traffic will basically become a rounding error in coming years. In his words, the web will thrive, but it will be built for and by agents.
What This Means for Marketers
Most marketing analytics were designed to measure humans: sessions, bounce rates, time on page. If a growing share of your visitors are agents, those metrics start to mislead.
- Rethink your reporting. Separate human and agent traffic where you can, so you know who is actually reading your content.
- Write for two audiences. Humans want a story. Agents want clear structure, plain language, and facts they can extract and cite.
- Make your key information easy to find. Pricing, services, locations, and contact details should be stated plainly, not buried in images or complicated page layouts.
Rauch's own experience supports this. Vercel optimized its documentation for agents, and the share of agent pageviews went up. Content that is easy for agents to read gets read by more agents.
What This Means for Developers
If more than 60% of deployments on Vercel are agentic, then software is increasingly being built and shipped by agents, not just by people typing code.
- Treat documentation as a product. Agents rely on it. Clear, current, well-organized docs are now part of your user experience.
- Design for machine consumers. Clean APIs, predictable responses, and readable error messages help agents work with your product.
- Build guardrails. When agents deploy and act on their own, review steps, permissions, and logging matter more, not less.
What This Means for Business Leaders
The question is no longer whether agents will touch your business. They already do. The practical questions are:
- Are agents finding you? If an agent is researching vendors on behalf of a buyer, can it understand what you offer?
- Are you using agents yourself? Your competitors are adopting them for outreach, follow-ups, support, and reporting.
- Is your data ready? Agents work best when your customer and pipeline data is clean, connected, and accessible.
Businesses that adapt early will be easier for agents to find and work with. Those that wait may find that a growing share of their audience never visits their site in person.
How to Start
You don't need to rebuild everything. Start small:
- Review your top pages and make sure the essential facts are stated clearly in text.
- Update your documentation and FAQs so they answer real questions directly.
- Look at your analytics and find out how much of your traffic is automated.
- Pick one repetitive workflow, such as lead follow-up or support triage, and hand it to an AI agent.
The Bottom Line
Guillermo Rauch's data points in one direction. Traffic is shifting to machines, deployments are shifting to agents, and the web is being rebuilt for and by them. The companies that treat agents as a real audience, and as real teammates, will be in the best position.
